Things
to know about Motorbike Insurance
- No
two motorbike insurance policies are quite the same. This
is important because when you are looking at the price there
may be a reason one is significantly cheaper than another.
- Buying
online motorbike insurance is invariably quicker than buying
over the phone, however there is a reason for this - in
order to shorten the quote online companies make assumptions
about you and your motorbike. Read these carefully.
- If
you intend to commute to work on your motorbike, ensure
you fill in the correct part of the online quote. If you
don't you may find your self uninsured.
- There
are reletively few direct insurers in the motorbike world
(a Direct insurer is one who underwrites their own insurance).
Most motorbike insurance companies are actually brokers
who offer cover provided by a panel of insurers. Why should
this matter? Brokers can provide more quotes and therefore
more likely to offer cover for more types of insurance risk,
however as they are an intermediary there are often charges
to do changes to your policy.
- Motorbikes
generally carry hefty excesses. Adding volutary excesses
reduces your insurance premium, however in the event of
a claim you will need to pay this. So choose an excess that
you can afford to pay
- If
you have modified your motorbike, i.e. after market exhausts,
panniers, screens, custom paint job, anything that enhances
performance - make sure you declare them in the online quote
if you do not you could get your insurance policy cancelled
or a claim repudiated. Some insurers make the assumption
that your motorbike is not modified - if you can't find
anywhere to add details in the online quote, check the assumptions.
- Motorbike
insurance policies do not cover your helmet and leathers.
Some motorbike insurers offer an additional policy to cover
this for an additional premium some don't at all.
- If
you carry a pillion make sure this is covered on the motorbike
insurance policy, some insurers ask others cover it automatically
- Online
motorbike insurance usually have an internet discount for
buying your insurance online.
- There
are lots of motorbike insurers out there so if one can't
quote you try another.
- PRICE
ISN'T EVERYTHING a cheap motobike insurance quote
isn't necessarily the best and you may find that the cheapest
policy doesn't cover you for what you need it for.
- The
vast majority of insurance companies offer a legal assistance
policy for an additional premium, this is generally a good
idea to buy as it will enable you to recover uninsured losses
i.e. excesses, your motorbike leathers / helmets, courtesy
vehicle, personal injury. Your insurance company will not
recover this for you as part of your claim - be warned.
