Bennetts
motorbike insurance is one of the countries best known motorbike
insurance companies, they have a good online presence (allowing
quote and buy, renewals and claims online) as well as being
a BMF preferred Insurance provider. They offer a range of
discounts that cover different types of rider i.e. offer up
to 30% off for female riders, scooters under 50cc get a discount,
lower prices for riders under 25, discounts for extra Thatcham
approved security or riding less than 3000 miles per year
and motorbikes over 3 years old. If
you have 2 motorbikes Bennetts provide a policy that covers
both.
General
comments:
As
such a high profile motorbike company, you'd expect Bennetts
to have a suitably impressive website, and the "nice
and fluffy" bits on the site are good i.e. games, BSB,
Bennetts babes etc. The quote and buy section is ok with a
well thought out motorbike seach function and premium display,
but it falls down on basics like spelling! (come on Bennetts!)
and help text display.
Number
of pages to premium (with no claims or convictions)
- 9
Good
points:
- Motorbike search function is actually really usable and
finds your motorbike without you having to know the exact
model specification
- Motorbike security device selection method
- Premiums are displayed clearly
Bad
points:
- Help icons - If you click on the help icons, the help text
appears in the right content box - it isn't very obvious that
anything has changed. If you are below the scroll line you
can't see the help text appear.
- Occupation search is cumbersome and not very user friendly
- Motorbike security device drop down list box is too narrow
and has too many options so scrolling is too quick.
- Easy to miss adding no claim discount protection
Bennetts
insurance quote process:
First
screen: Assumptions
This is the screen that you really need to read (but no one
actually does). Read this carefully as it will stop you wasting
your time if Bennetts can't cover you. General things that
Bennetts require: you have a credit or debit card to pay for
the policy, policy starts in 30 days, motorbike has not been
modified, is not Q plated, Business use is for proposer only
(if required), none of the riders have a medical condition
that requires notification to the DVLA, none of the riders
have CCJs - there are a few more so read them!
By
clicking "Accept" you confirm that you have read
and agreed them - it is a common thing for all insurers to
check these in the event of a claim so read them!
Second
screen: Address / contact details
E-mail address and phone number is compulsory, cover start
date and postcode. If you enter your postcode click "Get
my address" it will bring up all the addresses in that
postcode region
Third
screen: Proposer details
Title, name, date of birth, gender, marital
status, occupation, member of any motorbike organisation and
whether you own your own home.
Interestingly if you click the "Click
for full list" on the occupation a box "Relationship
to the main rider" appears at the top of the screen briefly.
Fourth
screen: Riding history
Type of licence (note to Bennetts, "license" in
reference to driving is spelt with a 'c' as it is spelt both
on this page), how many years you've held licence, how many
years you have been riding in the last 5 years, advanced rider
qualifications, ridden a bike over 600cc for more than 12
months, medical conditions, motoring convictions and claims
Additional
screen 1: Medical conditions
Interestingly they have a drop down list of medical conditions
that contain DVLA notifiable conditions - this will presumably
then decline to quote once you have filled in the quote.
What is condition from a drop down list, duration of disability,
number of years stabilised, other conditions, whether your
bike has been adapted, whether you are receiving on going
treatment and how long you have been effect free.
Additional
screen 2: Convictions
This is slightly more thorough than others.
Long drop down list of convictions, date, fine amount, conviction
penalty points, mandatory suspension and length of suspension
if applicable.
Additional
screen 3: Claims
Date of claim, description of accident, was the accident caused
by a disability, did you fully recover your costs, was a personal
injury made and what was the total cost of the claim. Finding
out the exact total cost of the claim is often very difficult
which makes this question fairly hard to get accurate - I'm
not sure of the consequences of this being wrong though and
no help text is given.
Fifth
screen: Add another rider
Here you can amend rider one and / or add other riders.
Sixth
screen: Motorbike details
Motorbike make, year of manufacture, engine
size (optional) then you select "Search for bike"
and it brings back all the bikes that fit that category -
a really nice piece of functionality one of the best motorbike
searches I've seen.
Is your registration personalised, what is your registration
number, is the motorbike an import, motorcycle value, expected
annual mileage, date of purchase.
Do you have a security device fitted, where is your bike kept
overnight and overnight parking postcode (if different from
normal).
Security device select function is good as it allows you to
easily select multiple devices - however the drop down list
box is not wide enough to enable you to view the the full
name.
Seventh
screen: Add more motorbikes
As with screen five, here you can amend motorbike one and
/ or add other motorbikes
Eighth
screen: Cover details
Type of cover, years no claim bonus for that motorbike, social
domestic and pleasure use including or excluding commuting
(though they don't define whether commuting is to a single
place of work or allows to more than one), selecting voluntary
excess from £0 to £500 in multiples of £50,
will you ever carry a pillion, have you previously owned a
motorbike*, have you previously held insurance for this motorbike*,
when do you want cover to start and where did you hear about
Bennetts.
*
These questions seem a bit odd as you have effectively answered
them in the fourth screen
Ninth
screen: Premium
Shows one lump sum premium and installment amounts (including
deposit) at the top in bright red numbers.
Option to protect your no claim discount is
a tiny box that is easily missed
Summary of details
Ability to amend details
There is also a number given at the bottom to help you retrieve
your quote.
